Windermere Lake is part of the Columbia River System as are Arrow Lakes.  The same water in Lake Windermere ends up in Arrow Lakes after a ~ 400 kilometer journey, North, West and then South!  Lake Windermere is dammed and  at the maximum is about 40' deep.  Arrow Lakes are 950' deep! Lake Windermere at only 3.5 hours from Calgary is closer than Arrow Lakes at 4.5 hours. The reasons why you should consider Arrow Lakes are:

  • If you want to be on 100' of flat waterfront at Lake Windermere, better bring $1.5 million or more.  Galena Shores is $300,000 on the waterfront for .5 - 1 acre of flat waterfront.
  • Arrow Lakes is the 3rd biggest lake in BC with over 500 kilometers of shoreline.  Lake Windermere is tiny compared to Arrow Lakes.
  • More beautiful surroundings.  Lake Windermere has the Rockies on the East side and the Purcell Mountains on the West side which of course are great!   Arrow Lakes has the Valhallas, Selkirks, and Monahees and are characterized by beautiful green mountains topped by glaciers perfectly reflected in the mirror smooth water.
  • There are only 3,000 people in the Arrow Lakes valley.  Lake Windermere is just plan busy be it on the water or on the road. If you want peace, quiet and beauty Arrow Lakes are a far better bet.
  • If you want to water ski at Lake Windermere, you had better get up at 6:00 AM.  You can water ski all day at Galena Bay on flat calm water.
  • Lake Windermere, as a dammed and shallow lake without a lot of flow, is characterized by water that contains a lot of sediment.  This is constantly churned up by the boat traffic and makes the water look quite unappealing.  Arrow Lake's water is clean, crystal clear, and very inviting.  It reminds people who are familiar with Canadian Shield lakes of that water quality.

If you are looking for a more affordable, quieter lake that is still within reasonable driving distance of Calgary, come visit us at Galena Shores.  You will be glad that you did!
